Audition for Ebenezer Obey Musical by Duke of Shomolu in Lagos (October 30)

Joseph Edgar — fondly known as the Duke of Shomolu — has announced auditions for his upcoming stage musical based on the life and legacy of Nigeria’s music legend, Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey.

A name synonymous with Nigerian theatre revival, Edgar has built a reputation for bringing iconic figures and moments from Nigeria’s past to life. From A Truth in Time (on Emir Sanusi I and his grandson, Emir Sanusi II, focusing on the intrigues surrounding their dethronements) and Ufok Ibaan (on the Aba women's riots), his productions blend history, nostalgia, and cultural depth with captivating storytelling.

A former investment banker turned theatre producer, Edgar’s recent success with Kashimowo — a powerful dramatisation of the June 12 hero, Late Chief MKO Abiola — reaffirmed his ability to deliver memorable performances that resonate with audiences.

Now, he’s setting the stage once again for something extraordinary — a musical tribute to one of Nigeria’s most celebrated music icons.
