The Trials of Brother Jero Stage Play Showing in Lagos This May

May 7, 2026

The Trials of Brother Jero is coming to the stage in Lagos this May as Vesta Orchestra presents a new opera adaptation of the classic work by Wole Soyinka.

Directed and executive-produced by renowned violinist Rosalyn Aninyei, the production combines theatre and orchestral performance to reimagine the satirical story for modern audiences. The opera was composed by Seun Owoaje, with the libretto created by Kehinde Oretimehin.

The cast includes Captain Gibbs, Ibe, Johnpaul Ochie, and V. Abiola Lepe.

The story follows a single day in the life of Brother Jeroboam, also known as Jero, a charismatic self-proclaimed prophet who operates along Bar Beach in Lagos. Through humour, manipulation, and sharp social commentary, the play explores themes of deception, ambition, religion, and human vulnerability.
