The Trials of Brother Jero Opera Stage Play Showing in Lagos This June
Jun 24, 2026

The Trials of Brother Jero is returning to the stage this June for an encore performance, giving audiences another chance to experience Vesta Orchestra’s opera adaptation of the classic play by Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka.
Directed by Gbolabo Gibbs Adebakin and executively produced by renowned violinist Rosalyn Aninyei, the production blends theatre and orchestral performance to offer a fresh interpretation of Soyinka’s satirical masterpiece. The opera was composed by Dr Seun Owoaje, while the libretto was created by Kehinde Oretimehin.
Set over the course of a single day, the story follows Brother Jeroboam, popularly known as Jero, a charismatic self-styled prophet who plies his trade along Bar Beach in Lagos. Through humour, manipulation, and biting social commentary, the play examines themes of deception, ambition, religion, and human vulnerability.
The cast features Captain Gibbs, Ibe, Johnpaul Ochie, and V. Abiola Lepe.
