The Trial of Dedan Kimathi Stage Play Showing in Lagos This July

The Trial of Dedan Kimathi, the celebrated historical drama by renowned Kenyan writers Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o and Micere Githae Mugo, is coming to Lagos this July in a special production by students of the Faculty of Arts, University of Lagos.

Directed by Dele Doherty, the play reimagines the colonial trial of Mau Mau freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi Waciuri, challenging the official narrative that branded him a terrorist. Instead, it presents Kimathi as a courageous revolutionary whose unwavering fight against colonial rule became a lasting symbol of African dignity, resistance, and the pursuit of freedom.

Through compelling dialogue and powerful performances, the play examines themes of justice, identity, courage, and the enduring legacy of anti-colonial resistance.

Joan Akhagbosu serves as producer, Osundiya Oluwanifemi as production manager, and Olonade Ayomide as stage manager.
