The Imprisonment of Obatala Stage Play in Ibadan This May

Apr 24, 2026

The Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Ibadan (UI) is set to host its 49th Initiation Ceremony this May, bringing together drama, ritual, and tradition in a symbolic rite of passage for new students.

At the heart of the event is The Imprisonment of Obatala, a stage play based on the work of Ulli Beier under his pen name Obotunde Ijimere. The production tells the story of Obatala, the Yoruba god of creation and King of Ife, whose journey to visit Shango leads to an unexpected downfall.

It will be interesting to see the performers blending movement, storytelling, and cultural symbolism to provide a rich theatrical experience for audiences.
