The Gods Are Not to Blame Stage Play Showing in California This April
Apr 10, 2026

Ola Rotimi’s timeless classic The Gods Are Not to Blame will be staged in California this April.
The powerful production will take place at the USC School of Dramatic Arts, bringing together professional actors and students in a dynamic theatrical collaboration. Directed by Bayo Akinfemi and co-produced by the African Theatre Artists Society, the play promises a compelling reinterpretation of a Nigerian literary masterpiece.
Adapted from Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, Rotimi’s version reimagines the tragic tale within a Yoruba cultural setting. It follows King Odewale, a determined ruler whose quest to save his kingdom from plague and famine leads him on a haunting journey of self-discovery—one that ultimately unravels devastating truths about his past.
Director Akinfemi, an assistant professor at USC, brings a wealth of experience to the production. A two-time Gemini Awards nominee, his acting credits span major international productions including Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Criminal Minds, NCIS: Los Angeles, and Bob Hearts Abishola.
