Kokoro Stage Play Showing in Lagos This April
Apr 3, 2026

Kokoro: The Melodies of the Blind Drummer, a powerful stage production celebrating one of Nigeria’s most iconic musical figures, will be showing in Lagos this April.
The play tells the moving story of Kokoro, the legendary blind minstrel from Owo, Ondo State, whose life and music helped shape the foundation of Nigerian Jùjú.
Through rich storytelling and music, the production explores his journey across the streets of Lagos and the airwaves of national radio, where his songs—sung in Yoruba—captured themes of love, money, urban life, and the human condition.
Despite influencing greats like King Sunny Adé and inspiring Cyprian Ekwensi’s The Drummer Boy, Kokoro’s life was marked by hardship, including years of poverty and homelessness.
