Iya Arike Stage Play In Abuja This February
Jan 8, 2026

Iya Arike is a deeply moving one-woman stage play that tells a story of survival, resistance, and rebirth in the heart of Lagos. Performed by Oluwaseun Odukoya (Aunty Shine), the production is written and directed by Om'Oba Jerry Adesewa and produced by Arojah Royal Theatre.
Set in the bustling Balogun Market, the play follows a fabric seller who recounts her journey through childhood trauma, hardship, and self-redefinition. Through humour, memory, and raw storytelling, Balogun becomes her sanctuary, classroom, and stage. She does not only sell fabric—she sells truth, dignity, and the stubborn will of a woman who refused to give up.
Iya Arike is a powerful exploration of resilience, gender, and urban survival, with Lagos itself breathing through one woman’s voice. Originally scheduled for December 2025, the play has now been postponed and will officially open Arojah Royal Theatre’s 2026 season.
