FELA & THE KALAKUTA QUEENS Stage Play Returns to Lagos This December

Nov 18, 2025

Get ready for a powerful celebration of music, culture, and African identity as FELA & THE KALAKUTA QUEENS returns to the Lagos stage this December.

This electrifying stage musical tells the story of legendary Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti through the eyes of the women who stood beside him, now known iconically as Kalakuta Queens. Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, the production dives deep into their lives as dancers, musicians, activists, lovers, and the backbone of the Kalakuta Republic.

Promoted as a bold and moving theatre experience, the musical revisits Fela’s fearless critique of post-independence Africa, speaking against corruption, greed, abuse of power, and the lingering influence of colonialism. Beyond the politics, it presents an intimate portrait of the Queens: their resilience, loyalty, fashion, dance, and the vibrant African identity they helped shape. The production also dispels long-held misconceptions and highlights their crucial role in Fela’s artistic revolution.
