Esther's Revenge Stage Play in London This July

Jul 17, 2026

Esther's Revenge, an immersive courtroom drama written and directed by Kenneth Uphopho and produced by Pawstudios Africa, is coming to London this July with a unique theatrical experience that places the audience at the heart of the story.

Inspired by a true story from the 1950s, the play follows Esther Ada Johnson, a young woman accused of murdering her white lover, Mark, in colonial Lagos. Set in 1953, Esther faces the death penalty by hanging as she recounts the events leading to her arrest, exposing the realities of colonial justice, misogyny, and unequal power structures.

Starring Bola Stephen-Atitebi in the lead role, it goes beyond traditional theatre by transforming the audience into participants. Twelve audience members are selected to serve as the jury; the rest of the audience also casts a vote at the end of the performance to decide whether Esther should be granted clemency or face execution.

Blending history, suspense and audience participation, the production challenges viewers to confront difficult questions about justice, truth and conscience.
