DURO Stage Play Showing in Lagos This July

Jun 29, 2026

DURO! DUROORIKEE (Wait…and Be Pampered) is a Yoruba mythological stage play coming to Lagos this July, bringing a powerful story rooted in indigenous beliefs, family bonds, and spiritual conflict to the stage.

Directed by Olubori Ojo and produced by Yemi Olanrewaju, the production stars veteran actress Gloria Anozie-Young in a story centred on an abiku child who has repeatedly died and returned to the same mother. On her thirteenth return, DURO chooses to remain permanently with her ageing mother, AGBEKẸ, rather than return to the spirit world.

Her decision is challenged when her spirit husband, JANKARIWO, arrives to persuade her to attend the once-in-a-century Red Moon Festival and return to their supernatural realm. As DURO prepares for her first earthly marriage, spiritual rituals and confrontations unfold in a desperate struggle to keep her alive.

Blending music, chants, dance, and rich Yoruba cultural symbolism, DURO! DUROORIKEE explores themes of motherhood, love, sacrifice, destiny, identity, and the enduring struggle between the physical and spiritual worlds.
